HDIRS Common Terms and Abbreviations

Following is a listing of specific terms that may be useful for HDIRS members, clients, vendors, employees, and stakeholders. Please contact us if you have suggestions for new glossary items.

Peer Review as a Shared Service

An educational, IT shared service soon available for a low fee to HDIRS-East and HDIRS-West hospital members to promote patient safety, more timely diagnosis and treatment, and high quality diagnostic imaging repository content. The Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) defines peer review as a “a process of self-regulation…employed to maintain standards, improve performance and provide credibility…in the context of a radiology service’s overall quality assurance program.” In offering this service, HDIRS will host, operate, and maintain the Coral Peer Review software on behalf of participating members.

Personal Health Information (PHI)

Patient-specific, protected health information that includes demographics, medical history, test and lab results, insurance details, diagnostic images, etc.

Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)

Ontario government legislation that provides rules for the collection, use and disclosure of personal health information. PHIPA mandates, for a start, that health service providers must obtain patient consent for sharing health information, treat health information as confidential, maintain accountability for the data, and prevent and report any breaches of confidentiality.

Personal Health Records (PHR)

Records and files accessed and maintained by individual patients.

Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS)

A common healthcare technology used within hospitals and independent health facilities for storing, retrieving, managing, distributing, viewing, and presenting diagnostic images and other types of medical images.
