HDIRS Common Terms and Abbreviations

Following is a listing of specific terms that may be useful for HDIRS members, clients, vendors, employees, and stakeholders. Please contact us if you have suggestions for new glossary items.

Data Sharing Agreement (DSA)

A legal document that describes organizational accountabilities and defines how organizations will exchange, use, and secure large volumes of data. All of HDIRS hospital members and independent health facility clients have signed a data sharing agreement to protect the personal health information stored in the repository.

Diagnostic Imaging Common Service (DI CS)

An Ontario Health initiative that provides consolidated access to digital health information from the regional DIRs. Diagnostic images and reports remain housed within the DIRs; the DI CS is a set of interfaces that allows DIRs to exchange messages.

Diagnostic Imaging Repository (DIR)

A secure computer system that contains patient radiology reports and images such as CT scans, ultrasounds, MRIs, mammograms, and x-rays.

Digital Imaging Communications in Medicine (DICOM)

An international standard by which diagnostic images are transferred.
