HDIRS Common Terms and Abbreviations

Following is a listing of specific terms that may be useful for HDIRS members, clients, vendors, employees, and stakeholders. Please contact us if you have suggestions for new glossary items.

Data Sharing Agreement (DSA)

A legal document that describes organizational accountabilities and defines how organizations will exchange, use, and secure large volumes of data. All of HDIRS hospital members and independent health facility clients have signed a data sharing agreement to protect the personal health information stored in the repository.

Diagnostic Imaging Common Service (DI CS)

An IT solution initiated and supported by eHealth Ontario to enable hospitals and independent health facilities across Ontario to share diagnostic imaging exams, regardless of the regional DIR they typically use, through eHealth Ontario’s ONE Portal.

Diagnostic Imaging Repository (DIR)

A secure computer system that contains patient radiology reports and images such as CT scans, ultrasounds, MRIs, mammograms, and x-rays.

Digital Imaging Communications in Medicine (DICOM)

An international standard by which diagnostic images are transferred.
